Seedstock Producer of the Year

We were honored by the Ohio Cattlemen's Association with the 2012 Seedstock Producer of the Year Award.  It is nice to be recognized among peers in our industry for what we have been doing for years -- producing quality Angus seedstock.  Thank you!

About us ~

The Bauman family has been in the Registered Angus cattle business for over 50 years. Turkey Run is a diversified cattle and crop farm located in southern Ohio in Adams County.  The original farmstead at 9523 State Route 348, Blue Creek, OH was purchased by Frank Bauman in 1956,

and he has been raising Registered Angus cattle and actively involved in the purebred cattle seedstock business ever since that time.  Another farm, four miles east of the original farmstead, at

13270 State Route 348, Otway, was purchased in 1991.   Since that time, Frank has been farming in partnership with his son, Kent who serves as the farm manager.

Currently there are about 140 head of Registered Angus brood cows with calves, and 40 replacement heifers on the farm.  There are also several steers being fed out for freezer beef.  In addition to corn and hay, the Baumans raise 34 acres of burley tobacco, and also raise tobacco seedling float plants for sale.

Kent Bauman has been involved with the cattle business since he was a young boy, and has been the farm manager at Turkey Run Farms since graduating from The Ohio State University in 1993 with a BS in Agriculture, majoring in Animal Science and Ag Economics.  Kent is responsible for all cattle and crop production and management, including herd health management, breeding selection, artificial insemination, and marketing decisions.

Kent’s wife, Joy, also graduated from The Ohio State University with a BS in Agriculture in 1992.  She majored in Agriculture Communications and Animal Science.  In addition to helping with many aspects of cattle and crop production, Joy works at The Ohio State University South Centers, near Piketon, Ohio.

While at
Ohio State, both Kent and Joy were active in the Saddle and Sirloin Club. Kent was a member of the OSU Livestock Judging Team, and Joy worked in the Animal Science Department Meat Laboratory. As youth, both Kent and Joy were extremely involved in local and state 4-H and FFA activities.  Kent's county 4-H Livestock Judging Team won the State Contest twice, and he was a member of the Ohio 4-H Livestock Judging Team.  He also was the State FFA Beef Proficiency Winner.  Joy earned her State FFA Degree served as a State FFA Officer.  Kent earned both the State and National FFA Degrees.

Together, Kent and Joy have been recognized with the State Young Farmers Association Beef Production Award, the Phillip Morris USA Excellence in Tobacco Production Award, and the 2011 Ohio Cattlemen's Association Seedstock Producer of the Year.  Most notably, they were honored as the 2003 Ohio Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Farm Couple, and represented Ohio in the American Farm Bureau Young Farmer and Rancher Achievement competition, where they were recognized as one of the top five young farm couples in the nation.

Kent and Joy believe it is important to be involved in their community and agricultural organizations in order to be a part of the process and policies that govern our industry.  They hope to instill these values in their three daughters, Emily, Molly, and Whitney, as they grow up on the family farm.  All three Bauman girls are members of the Buckeye Barn Busters 4-H Club, which Joy and Kent advise.  They all take beef breeding and feeder calf projects, plus an assortment of other projects in 4-H.  Emily has been selected to serve as an Ohio 4-H Ambassador for 2012-2014.  Besides taking care of their 4-H project animals, the girls actively work on the farm, doing daily cattle feeding chores, keeping the barns bedded, doing heat detection, and assisting with working cattle for breeding and health management purposes.  While the girls wold prefer to work with the cattle, they also help take care of the tobacco plants in the greenhouses and help setting tobacco as well.

Cattle are sold predominantly through the farm's Turn Out to Grass Production Sale, held annually the first Saturday in April.

Additionally, several bulls are consigned annually to the West Virginia Young Sire Evaluation Program at Point Pleasant, West Virginia.  The Point Pleasant Test utilizes a forage-based ration and bulls are fed to achieve optimum average daily gain.  The program stresses a total performance approach, not only measuring gain on-test, but also reporting indicators of reproductive and carcass performance.

Visitors are always welcome at Turkey Run Angus Farm! Just be sure to call ahead so we’ll be able to show you around.
